The Teddy!
I had the pleasure to meet the President Theodore Roosevelt today. He is such a charismatic, energetic, smart and opinionated man. From the moment he became President in 1901 after McKinley’s assassination he dominated the public. “Teddy” passed Progressive reforms and also expanded the powers of the presidency. He also cares a lot for the people of America. In 1902 he helped coal miners in a strike for a pay raise and a shorter workday. It was the first time that the federal government helped workers in a labor dispute. He passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act to improve the quality of food, reacting to the publication of the novel by Upton Sinclair in 1906 ‘The Jungle’ which described filthy conditions in the meatpacking industry. Teddy Roosevelt really cares for us Americans and our natural resources. He proved that when Congress passed the National Reclamation Act that gave the federal government the power to decide where and how water would be distributed.
